The primary mission of St. Mary's Chinese Schools and Center is evangelization, spreading the message of God to the Chinese community of the Bay Area through a variety of social resources. St. Mary's is a ministry of the Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco. It is administered by the Paulist Fathers, an indigenous American order of priests founded to conduct missionary activities within North America.

We are also designated as Holy Family Parish, the national parish for all of Chinese descent living in the three counties of the Archdiocese. The name was chosen to reflect the high premium the Chinese people have traditionally placed on the family. It denotes our devotion to the Holy Family, the parents, Mary and Joseph, and their son, Jesus. We have a full calendar of spiritual events, but logistics have been temporarily altered since we sold our historic site until our new Center is built. We still meet together as one Faith Community on Sundays.

  • Regular Sunday masses (liturgies) are held in the lower level auditorium of Old St. Mary's Cathedral at 660 California Street, corner of Grant Avenue, at 9:30 A.M. in English and at 11:00 A.M. in Cantonese.
  • Daily masses are available through the regular school year Tuesdays through Fridays at 7:20 A.M. in the old church of Our Lady of Guadalupe at 910 Broadway, where the school is currently housed.
  • Confessions (Reconciliations) are in English in the main church of Old St. Mary's (see above) every weekday after the noon mass and again on Saturdays at 4:00 P.M.
  • For baptisms, visits to the sick, liturgies for the recently deceased, or any emergencies, call our pastor's office. That is also the contact number for any persons interested in learning more about our Faith or in enrolling in our formal course for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.).
  • Bible study classes for adults are available in Cantonese on Sundays from 12:15 to 1:15 P.M.
  • Faith sharing experiences in Cantonese on Sundays 9:45am to 10:30am
  • St. Mary's Holy Family Parish is organized into the Holy Family Association, for those interested in more activities, and the Pastoral Council, for administrative purposes.
