St. Mary's Schools and Center was forced to sell its historic site at Stockton and Clay Streets in San Francisco due to seismic concerns. The students and programs of both the Day School and Language School are temporarily cramped into very tight quarters at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 910 Broadway.

The proceeds from the sale of the Stockton Street property are to be used to build a more expansive St. Mary's in Chinatown at Kearny and Jackson Streets. Because of St. Mary's record of serving the Chinese community, the Archdiocese of San Francisco purchased this parcel of land, the last large open space in Chinatown, for $2.25 million.

This land was the site of the old International Hotel, home to elderly and indigent Filipinos and Chinese for decades before the residents were violently evicted in 1976 in the middle of the night.
This paved the way for the buildings to be condemned and razed. Dianne Feinstein, Mayor of San Francisco at that time, stepped in, however, and appointed a citizens' committee to ensure that any future development on that site would always include housing for low-income seniors. Over the years, several projects were submitted to the City, but each eventually failed for one reason or another until Father Daniel E. McCotter, C.S.P., Director of St. Mary's and Pastor of Holy Family Parish, proposed the possibility of building a new St. Mary's on this spot in collaboration with the Chinese and Filipino Communities.

Title to the land was acquired by the Archdiocese of San Francisco on April 1, 1997. The Archdiocese would construct a much-needed underground parking facility for 154 vehicles. This structure would serve as the foundation for a fifteen story low-income senior housing tower and a new St. Mary's, which will provide approximately 49,000 square feet of space. Grants have been awarded to the ChineseCommunity Development Corporation (CCDC) from the Mayor's Office of Housing and from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development to build the senior citizens' tower. Upon completion, the tower will be handed over to International Senior Housing Incorporated (ISHI) for management. Side by side will rise the new St. Mary's Schools and Center, which is estimated to cost over twelve million dollars, much of which must be privately raised by St. Mary's Capital Campaign.

Our New School

The new St. Mary's Schools and Center will be located at 838 Kearny Street in San Francisco, 94108, adjacent to a fifteen story senior housing tower located on the corner of the same property. Beneath these two giants will be a three-level underground parking facility for 154 vehicles. Our new St. Mary's will have:
  • 49,000 square feet spread over four and one-half floors, allowing each classroom twice the amount of space compared to the premises at Stockton and Clay Streets
  • 9 computer-equipped classrooms
  • A science laboratory
  • A bilingual library
  • A huge multi-use gymnasium/dining hall/meeting space, home to the Gordon J. Lau Community Center, open to the entire community
  • 2 separate outdoor play areas
  • A chapel to accommodate 350 persons
