This historic school has been teaching the children of San Francisco's Chinese Community since 1921. It was founded by the Paulist Fathers based at the edge of Chinatown. It continues to operate under their direction and that of the Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco. St. Mary's has taught thousands of students who have gone on to lead productive lives, solidly grounded in basic academics and Christian and cultural values. Here are some facts:
  • 200 students are enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade in a standard California elementary curriculum, repeatedly certified by tough surveyors from the Western Association of Catholic Schools. Over 85% of our graduates are non-Catholic.
  • Our curriculum is augmented by regular classes in Cantonese, teaching both the spoken and written forms. Music, art, and athletics are well-established extra-curricular activities.
  • Our philosophy of teaching is focused on individual academic excellence, American citizenship, preservation of Chinese heritage, and Christian morality;
  • Although our children are first or second generation immigrants and test with varying results in the early grades, by the time they are tested in the eighth grade, 80% of them are in the national 90th percentile.
  • 50% of our graduates gain acceptance by rigid admission standards into Lowell High School, the City's premier academic public secondary institution. A very high percentage of those seeking entry into private high schools are also accepted. St. Mary's graduates are prized for their industry, intelligence, and deportment.
  • Our faculty is highly experienced. Our dedicated lay faculty are augmented by several religious sisters of the Catholic Church. The result is a great deal of personal attention and loving care fully apparent in every graduate. Their lifelong service to God and the Church are their service to St. Mary's.
  • Personal neatness and discipline are emphasized by school uniforms, which also provide some economy and impart a sense of spirit.
  • The tuition is mid-range among all Catholic schools with discounts for additional siblings.
  • Parental participation in the education and formation of their children is strongly encouraged through a vibrant Parent-Teachers Group.
  • The best testimony to the strengths of St. Mary's is its graduates, who dot the Bay Area landscape in business, the professions, and politics. All are known for their moral character. Many are leaders in their own vocations. They are our best advertisement.
